Disappearance

This was my first project after specialising in the Fine Art pathway.
The working theme of the project was identity disguise, disappearance and the re-invention of self-image. I explored various approaches to portraiture and imagery using both photography and video.

Initial research primarily consisted of looking at the work of Duane Michals, Christian Boltanski and Gillian Wearing among others. I also experimented with various processes of disturbing printed photographs of myself in an effort to hide my identity. Processes included: frying, bleaching, cutting, covering, burning, scratching and folding.

Whilst taking these photos in the University studio space in little makeshift dark spaces I decided to venture further into video. I chose my younger brother as the subject, as he has a very photogenic and young face. The video consists of many layers of sequences, the video use primarily focus as a form of hiding mechanism as well as a strong use of lighting. The clip has been edited with an added grain, and slower frame rate to mimic the earlier part of the project where I attempted to hide my face with various abrasive processes.
